Rules Interface

Below is a screenshot of the Rules Engine interface:

The interface consists of the following components:

Actions Menu

The Actions menu contains actions for managing and exporting the rules. The following options are available:

  • Up
  • Down
  • Add
  • Remove
  • Move Top
  • Move Bottom
  • Export

See below for explanation of the options.

Export saves all the existing rules to a text file called "default.txt" created in the installation folder. This can then be used to create configuration files for Directory Manager. All rule settings are exported.

Toolbar

The toolbar contains buttons for rule management options. The following buttons are available:

  • Up
  • Down
  • Add
  • Remove
  • Move Top
  • Move Bottom

Up and Down increase or decrease the rules priority in the rules table. The rules position in relation to other rules is vital in order to process entries as desired, remembering that rules are processed from the top down.

Once an entry has been processed by one rule, another will not process it, even if it matches the filter value. To ensure entries are processed as expected, use Up and Down to manipulate the order in which they are applied.

If entries are not being processed correctly, ensure the rule priorities are correct.

Add and Remove adds a new rule and removes the currently selected existing rule correspondingly.

Move Top and Move Bottom move the selected rule to the top or bottom of the list respectively.

Rule Table

The rule table lists the rules already created and allows editing of existing rules. Click on a rule in the table to select it. Each option can then be updated as required.

Where an ellipsis (...) is presented, clicking this will display further options.

There are a number of keyboard shortcuts that can be used in the rule table:

  • To navigate through the rule options, click in a field and then use the Tab key to move to the next field.
  • The Space key can be used to open further options when the ellipsis (...) is shown.
  • When selecting from a drop down list, pressing the first letter of an option will select it, and can be used to cycle through options starting with the same letter.
  • Press F2 to allow text to be pasted into a free text field.
