Soft Purging

By default, when a contact is purged, it is removed from the directory. Soft purging allows these contacts to be moved to an OU (called a holding container) rather than be removed. This allows a manual review to take place before the contacts are finally removed.

NOTE: Soft Purging is not available on Exchange 5.5 directories.

To apply soft purging, go to the Servers tab and select a server. Tick the Place purged entries in this Holding Container option. Next select an OU on the directory by clicking the ellipsis (...) button. All purged contacts will now be moved to this OU.

Having old contacts in the holding container can potentially cause problems or confusion when running imports. When Contact Manager runs a process either started manually or when manual purging is started, a confirmation box will be shown asking whether to remove all contacts from the holding container.

  • Yes – all contacts will be removed from the holding container before processing / purging starts
  • No – contacts will be left in the holding container and processing / purging started
  • Cancel – All processes stopped

If using soft purging, it is good practice to review holding containers frequently.
