How to set up Purging

Before setting up purging, decide on a purge age to apply. This will be how long a contact should go without being updated before it is purged. Bear in mind how often address books will be imported to update the contacts. If this is to happen every two weeks, there is no point setting a purge age of one week. Also consider allowing some time for unanticipated events that may delay the import. A purge age of 30 days is recommended.

NOTE: When updating a purge age, this is not applied to contacts on the directory until they are updated via the next import.

In the rules engine, choose a Purge Type for each rule:

  • Always - Purging will take place on the location used by the rule EVERY time processing takes place, irrespective as to whether the rule was used (i.e., some entries matched the rule) during the import or not.
  • If Updated - Purging only takes place on the location used by the rule IF the rule was used during the import process.
  • Never - Purging will NOT take place on the location used by the rule.

If two rules point to the same OU then both purge types will be applied. For example, if one rule has "Never" and another says "Always" then the purging will be applied by the rule with "Always". Therefore, ensure that if several rules point to the same OU, they all have the same purge type.

If Soft Purging is to be used, add a holding container to the server configuration.

When purging has been configured through the rules, tick the "Turn on Automatic Purging" option on the Process Settings tab.

Purging is now configured for use. Contacts will have the expiry date added / updated on each import and purging will take place after each import.
